Title: Interactive Online Resources for Mathematics
Presenter: Holt Wilson
Room: Poe 420
Description: The web is full of high-quality, interactive applets and accompanying lessons to support teachers' mathematics instruction. This session will familiarize teachers with different online resources and provide teachers with time to select and plan to use a lesson in their classroom.

Thoughts on Interactive Materials (Sinclair, 2003)
  • Students who have not learned to explore interactive diagrams can only analyze static, onscreen representations.
  • Exploration involves learning to notice, to pose questions, and to use change to explore
  • Different types of Teaching Styles: Showing and telling, Leading, Shepherding
  • Effectiveness of interactive diagrams are related to supporting instructional materials. Good materials: encourage students to explain, help students move through an investigation by prompting them to make anticipations and then to examine evidence, check hypotheses, and to consider other possibilities
  • Importance of "rug-pulling"
  • Effective interactive diagrams: use color, motion, and action buttons; draw attention to key features; prompt action and reflection.

Conflict Resolution
There are 6 clubs at King High SChool that want to meet once a week for one hour, right after school lets out. The problem is that several students belong to more than none of the clubs, so not all the clubs can meet on the same day. Also, the school wants to schedule as few days per weeks for after-school clubs meetings as possible. Below is a list of the clubs and the club members who also belong to more than one club:

Varsity Club: Chris, Shanda, Carlos
Math Club: Chris, Carlos, Wendy
French Club: Shanda
Drama Club: Carlos, Vikas, Wendy
Computer Club: Vikas, Shanda
Art Club: Shanda

Create a schedule so that students belonging to more than one club can attend meetings. Use this tool if needed .
